What is IUI and what is it used for?

If you're hoping to grow your family and looking for a less invasive fertility treatment, intrauterine insemination (IUI) may be the right starting point. IUI is a short, in-office procedure that places washed, concentrated sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation — increasing the chances that sperm and egg will meet.

IUI can help you overcome a wide range of barriers to conception, including:

What to expect during an IUI cycle

The IUI timeline typically spans 2-3 weeks, with a few clinic visits and a brief procedure. Most people are surprised by how simple it feels once you're in it. Here’s a step-by-step look at the process.

Fertility Assessment

We’ll start with a full review of your history and goals, then use diagnostic testing (like bloodwork, ultrasound, and imaging of your fallopian tubes) to confirm that IUI is a good fit for you.

Ovulation Stimulation

Depending on your cycle, you may take fertility medications to help your ovaries produce one or more mature eggs. You’ll come in for 2-3 monitoring visits for bloodwork and ultrasound. When your eggs are ready, we’ll either track ovulation naturally or trigger it with a hormone injection to ensure proper timing for IUI.

Sperm Preparation

On the day of the procedure, your partner provides a fresh sperm sample (or donor sperm is thawed). Our lab team processes it to concentrate motile sperm and remove seminal fluid — giving the best possible chance of success

IUI Procedure

The procedure is quick and usually painless. It feels similar to a Pap smear. We insert a thin catheter through the cervix to place the sperm directly into the uterus. Some people feel mild cramping or have light spotting afterward, but most resume normal activities the same day.

After the Procedure

You’ll rest briefly in the clinic before heading home. The hardest part is what comes next — waiting for results. After about 2 weeks, we’ll call to schedule your pregnancy test.

“Pregnant after first IUI attempt”

Working with Dr. Akopians was the best experience I've ever had working with a doctor. My wife and I were so happy with the fertility process from beginning to end. I am currently 14 weeks pregnant after our very first IUI attempt!

Dr. Akopians explained everything thoroughly and made sure all questions we had were answered. We were always aware of what the next step would be. Everyone was exceptionally warm and kind to us and always very professional.

Common Questions about IUI

We’re here to answer your questions and guide you through what comes next. Read on for more about intrauterine insemination, and reach out to our clinic for support that fits your needs.

  • IUI, or intrauterine insemination, places concentrated sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. This can improve the chances of fertilization by using higher quality sperm and introducing sperm closer to the egg.

  • Success rates for IUI range from 10-20% per cycle, depending on your age, diagnosis, and whether fertility medications are used. Many people conceive within a few cycles. We’ll monitor your progress and talk candidly about when to consider other approaches if needed.

  • No. IUI is a short, in-office procedure that typically feels no more uncomfortable than a Pap smear.

  • Generally, people try 3-6 IUI cycles before making the decision to move on to IVF. If you’re over the age of 35, we may recommend completing fewer cycles before transitioning to IVF or proceeding to IVF directly.

  • IUI is low-risk. The most common side effects are temporary cramping or spotting. If you're using fertility medications, we’ll closely monitor to reduce the risk of multiple gestations.

  • IUI isn’t the best option for everyone. If your fallopian tubes are blocked or severely damaged, or if the sperm count is extremely low or absent, we may suggest other options like IVF.
