What’s the difference between egg and embryo freezing, and what other options are available?

What you can expect
Starting IVF may feel overwhelming, especially if you need to make the decision quickly for health reasons. But the process takes just 2-3 weeks, and it can be comforting to know you’ll have options to grow your family one day. Explore the egg freezing process at our Beverly Hills clinic.
Evaluation
We start with hormone testing, an ultrasound, and other screening to assess your fertility. Dr. Akopians will walk you through the results and create a personalized plan to help you achieve the best outcome.
Cycle Coordination
You’ll notify us on day 1 of your menstrual cycle, and come in around day 2-4 for labs and an ultrasound. Based on your results, we’ll refine your treatment plan and order medications. We'll also teach you or your partner how to administer injections.
Ovarian Stimulation
For 10-12 days, you’ll take injections* to stimulate your ovaries to grow the follicles (eggs). On your first day of injections, a clinical nurse will check in to answer questions and provide support. During this phase, you’ll come in every 2-3 days for bloodwork and ultrasounds to track progress and adjust medications as needed.
Egg Retrieval
When your follicles are ready, you’ll take a trigger shot and we’ll schedule your retrieval. The 20-30 minute procedure is done under anesthesia, and you’ll go home the same day under the care of a loved one.
Cryopreservation
If you’re freezing eggs, they’ll be frozen and stored immediately. If you’re freezing embryos, the eggs will be fertilized in the lab with fresh or frozen sperm, and the resulting embryos will be monitored in the lab for 5-7 days before freezing.
Follow-up
We’ll call you the day after your retrieval to see how you’re doing and review your results. If you froze embryos, we’ll continue updating you as the embryos develop, and talk through next steps when results are available.
“Kind and welcoming team, exceptional experience”
I cannot overstate how exceptional Dr. Akopians and her team are. They’re kind and welcoming. I froze my eggs with her and the experience was terrific. They checked in with me constantly to see how I was feeling and make sure things were going as planned. After the egg retrieval, Dr. Akopians called me herself to check on me to see how I was feeling.
Dr. Akopians shows care when dealing with her patients. I always felt like I had her undivided attention. She put my needs first, as did all of the team.

How to prepare for freezing your eggs
We’ll tailor your prep plan to your needs. Here are some general tips we share with patients who are freezing their eggs in Beverly Hills.
Nutrition | A Mediterranean-style diet is best for egg and embryo freezing. Limit caffeine and avoid alcohol.
Supplements | We’ll recommend prenatal vitamins, vitamin D, and possibly CoQ10 or DHEA depending on your lab results.
Gentle Movement | Avoid vigorous exercise or intercourse during your treatment to reduce risk of ovarian torsion. Walking is encouraged.
Planning | You’ll have several office visits and may feel more tired than usual. Set aside time for extra rest if you can.
Support System | Have a loved one drive you on retrieval day and help with injections if needed. Support makes a difference.

FAQs about egg & embryo freezing
This process may be new to you, and you will likely have questions. Read our answers to common questions we hear from people exploring egg freezing in Los Angeles. For personalized advice, schedule a consultation with Dr. Akopians.
-
Earlier is better — freezing your eggs before age 35 is ideal. But age isn’t the only factor. Dr. Akopians can assess your ovarian reserve and help you make an informed decision at any stage.
-
Age plays a role in how many eggs you’ll need. The younger you are when you freeze, the fewer eggs typically needed to have a strong chance of success later on. For example, research shows that women under 34 may need around 10 eggs for a 75% chance of live birth. By age 37, that number can double. Dr. Akopians will personalize your treatment plan to account for your age, medical history, family-building goals, and timeline.
-
No, you won’t run out of eggs. Women are born with 1 to 2 million eggs, and even multiple egg retrieval cycles only use a small fraction. Your body naturally loses eggs over time, but freezing doesn’t speed that up or reduce your future chances of conceiving.
-
Ovarian stimulation and retrieval only takes about 2-3 weeks. If you're coming from out of town, we can coordinate around your schedule.
-
For urgent cases, we can start injections at any point in your cycle so that you can start treatment right away.
-
Consult with your oncologist for this question, as timing depends on your treatment type and your individual recovery. When you’re ready to grow your family, try to conceive naturally first. Consider using your frozen eggs if you’ve tried unsuccessfully for one year, or if you’ve tried unsuccessfully for 6 months and are over 35 years old.
-
If you and your partner are having trouble with injections, we can connect you with a trusted nurse with over 20 years of experience to come to give the injections at your home.
-
Most patients feel tired or may have cramps for a day or two. You’ll need someone to drive you home, and we’ll send you home with clear aftercare instructions. The most important thing you can do after your procedure is rest.
-
You may feel bloated, emotional, or tired — and that’s normal. We'll check in often and adjust things if needed.
-
Indefinitely, as long as they remain safely cryopreserved.
