What is IVF and what is it used for?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the most widely used and effective fertility treatments available, with an estimated 2% of American babies born through this treatment. IVF involves retrieving eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing them with sperm in a lab, and transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus.
Our IVF clinic in LA supports patients navigating a wide range of challenges like these:
DAMAGED FALLOPIAN TUBES
IRREGULAR MENSTRUAL CYCLES
PRESERVING FERTILITY BEFORE CANCER TREATMENT
ADVANCED MATERNAL AGE
LGBTQ+ FAMILY BUILDING
SINGLE PARENT CONCEPTION
UNEXPLAINED INFERTILITY

The IVF timeline at Beverly Hills Reproductive Center
Starting IVF may feel overwhelming or uncertain. Our Beverly Hills IVF center will guide you through each phase, from your first injection to your pregnancy test. We handle the details so you can focus on your wellbeing.
1. Start of Treatment
Treatment begins with a call on the first day of your menstrual cycle. You’ll come in on day 2-4 for blood work and an ultrasound to guide your treatment plan.
Once we finalize your treatment plan, we’ll order your medications and teach you or your partner how to administer injections*.
On your first day of injections, a clinical nurse will check in to answer questions and make sure you feel confident moving forward.
*Prefer not to do your own injections? We can connect you with a nurse to administer them at your home. Ask about this option during your visit.
2. Egg Retrieval
You’ll take daily medications for about 10-12 days to stimulate follicle (egg) growth. During this time, you’ll come in every 2-3 days for monitoring, and we’ll adjust your dosage if needed.
Once your follicles are ready, you’ll take a “trigger shot” at a very specific time and we’ll schedule your egg retrieval.
The egg retrieval is completed under anesthesia and takes approximately 20-30 minutes. You’ll go home the same day under the care of a loved one.
3. Fertilization
The eggs and sperm are combined in the IVF lab to create embryos. If fresh sperm is being used, your partner will provide it on the day of retrieval. If frozen sperm is being used, it will be thawed that day.
Over the next 5-7 days, the lab closely monitors embryo development. You’ll receive updates throughout the process, and your care team will discuss next steps with you, including embryo freezing and genetic testing.
4. Embryo Transfer
The embryo transfer may involve a fresh transfer a few days after retrieval, or a frozen embryo transfer (FET) in a natural or programmed cycle. You’ll undergo a saline ultrasound in preparation. The transfer is a quick, non-surgical procedure done while you’re awake. A small catheter is used to place the embryo in the uterus.
5. Pregnancy test
About 9-11 days after transfer, you’ll come back for a blood test to confirm pregnancy. Depending on the results, we’ll talk through the next steps and answer your questions, as always.
“Best-rated IVF clinic in the US”
After several early miscarriages and 3 failed IVF transfers from clinics in the Midwest, I sat down and went through every clinic in the US to find the one with the highest live birth success rates for women in my age category, over 40. Dr. Akopians was rated the best.
Along the way Dr. A was calm, confident, understanding and very optimistic. She left me feeling hopeful and positive. No other RE ever did that, they always blamed the lack of success on my age. Dr. A never made me feel like I was too old. The quality of her lab was phenomenal too. I was not able to even reach embryo stage at the previous two clinics with their labs.
We had a very successful experience with Dr. Akopians, resulting in 3 beautiful children. She is simply not like the others. We could not have completed our family without her!

What to expect during your IVF consultation
Your first visit is an in-person or virtual consultation where we learn about your fertility journey and lay out a personalized treatment plan. If you’re pursuing treatment with a partner, we encourage both of you to attend, as both of your medical histories may play a role.
After your appointment, you’ll receive a summary of next steps. This may include fertility tests, follow-ups, and a conversation with our office manager about any financial questions. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of what’s ahead.
To get the most out of your consultation, be ready to discuss:
Your medical and reproductive history
What to expect from testing & treatment
Past fertility treatments & test results
Your family building goals
Specific questions or concerns

How to prepare for IVF treatment in Beverly Hills
Preparing your body and mind for IVF can help support success. Here's what we recommend to our patients:
Fertility Testing
Undergo ovarian reserve testing (AMH), uterine exams, and expanded genetic screenings. Male partners should have semen analysis.
Nutrition
Follow a Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit caffeine and alcohol use. Avoid marijuana use, smoking, and vaping
Movement
Walking during IVF is encouraged, but avoid intense workouts or intercourse during your treatment cycle.
Mental Health
IVF can feel like a rollercoaster. Journaling, mindfulness, and support groups can help.
Financial Planning
Budget for treatment costs and consider the potential need for more than one cycle.
Supplements
Take prenatal vitamins, vitamin D, and CoQ10. Talk to your IVF doctor to see if you need any additional supplements.
Scheduling
Plan for frequent monitoring visits and anticipate that you may need rest on some days.
Partner Involvement
You’re in this together. When possible, attend appointments together and give injections as a team.
